Discover the story of the girl who sewed the American flag that inspired the lyrics of the National Anthem in this beautifully illustrated celebration of our country’s iconic symbol for freedom.

Caroline Pickersgill came from a family of the best flag makers in Baltimore. She and her family proudly stitched the grand flag that gallantly whipped in the wind over Fort McHenry.

But when the British attacked Baltimore on September 12, 1814, would those broad stripes and bright stars still wave strong? Would America still be free and remain the home of the brave?

Customer Reviews Most helpful customer reviews 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Loved it! By Colleen Paeff This book focuses on 13-year-old Caroline Pickersgill, one of at least six women who helped stitch together the flag that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814, inspiring the words to The Star-Spangled Banner. The author gives credit to Caroline’s mother (“…she created a five-pointed star that nestled in perfect rows.”) and grandmother (whom she says stitched “George Washington’s first flag when he fought during the American Revolutionary War”), as well as some cousins and an indentured servant named Grace (who we get a bit more information about in the author’s note) for stitching the flag, but she also acknowledges the women who worked behind the scenes: “orphans, immigrants, indentured servants, and freed slaves who cooked, farmed the small garden, cleaned, and worked on other flag and signal orders so Caroline and the other five ladies could sew a flag large enough that the British would see it from miles away.”Ultimately, though, this is Caroline’s story and we get to experience her hard work on the flag (“three-hundred-fifty-thousand tiny weaves”) as well as the fear she feels when British bombs are falling on Fort McHenry and Caroline wonders if her “flag was still there.” Kristen Fulton expertly weaves lyrics from the Star-Spangled Banner into the text of the story. And Holly Berry’s illustrations, which include block print and collage, provide the perfect compliment to Fulton’s words. The author’s note gives the reader more details about how Caroline’s mother started her flag making business (“Pickersgill Flags and Ensigns”) even though people frowned upon female business-owners at the time and how she used her success to “reach out to women and young girls who didn’t have support from a man.” She sounds like a true philanthropist!Though I’m sure the author must have used multiple sources geared towards adults in her research for this book, I appreciate that the ones she chose to list under “Sources” are ones that children who have read and enjoyed “Long May She Wave” (and there will be many!) will easily understand. I expect this book will be a gateway for many budding historians who will want to dig deeper into the fascinating history of our country. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Star Spangled Hit! By Lisa rose This book is a star spangled hit! It perfectly weaves together the history of the war of 1812, the words of our national anthem, and the story of an unknown girl named Caroline Pickergill. As a former classroom teacher, I know this book will make history come alive! Kids will be able to connect to it, and adults will appreciate it simple complexity. The bold red, blue and white contrasted with grey tones make the flags pop off the page. This book belongs in every elementary classroom and library. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Love the author's writing style and the way she interweaves ... By J.H. Love the author's writing style and the way she interweaves phrases from the national anthem into the lines of the story. Also love the way various verbs and prepositions are provided in large typography to emphasize the action as the flag is being made and then during the battle at Ft. McHenry. The illustrator does a wonderful job of depicting the darkness and sudden flares of bombs lighting up the night. The flag end papers are also lovely, with stitching that looks 3-dimensional. Kids will love learning about this young woman and all of the other women who helped create this amazing, enormous flag with stars measuring more than two feet across. Great book!
